Project Title: Expanding Physics into the Hallway
Recipient(s): Paul Thompson, Pat Doherty, James Lenz
Affiliation: Park Center High School - Brooklyn Park, MN
Description:

We propose a project that has the potential of expanding physics beyond the classroom into the entire community. The skills of problem solving and inquiry will benefit all aspects of society from increasing job efficiency to raising children.

We see the ultimate program as a multi-step process as follows:

  1. Expand the classroom to the hallway
  2. Expand the hallway to the home
  3. Expand the student to the parent
  4. Expand the parent to the job and community

In our high school, and we believe this is true in most high schools, we can attract our fair share of students who want to discover the details of physics. Physics is somewhat unique however in that it does not have the outflow of awareness beyond the classroom that other topics, such as music, history, literature, and physical education have. We believe our best disciples are our students. We expect to establish methods to facilitate the physics student in taking the physics concepts outside the classroom to their peers and into the community.

What we propose is to establish a multimedia presentation framework that will allow the student teams to document their learning in a lively computer slide presentation. This presentation would then be shown continuously on monitrs in the hallways of the high school.
